"Hey! Heath! Get off of my clown!"

Brothers, my dears, I was rockin' out in the car this morning to this Rolling Stones song. I love it. You guys gotta learn it, man.

Little known story about this song and how it came to be written. When the Stones were kids they went to their friend Heathcliffe's birthday barbecue. Now, Mick and Keith loved clowns but Heath was afraid of them, unbeknown to his parents, and when the clown arrived the birthday boy started brutally conking Bozo upside the head with the stick meant for the pinata. The young-someday-to-be-Stones were terrified. They looked on in horror as the clown fell unconscious to the ground, his red, ball nose jarring loose and bouncing across the lawn. The arrival of the ambulance pretty much signified the party was over, and without even having had any ice cream or cake, everybody went home in tears.

The two boys never forgot this terrible incident and when they grew up they wrote "Get Off Of My Clown" to memorialize the bludgeoned party entertainer. The edgy tune was a perfect follow-up to the success of their hit, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". "Yeah," Keith Richards has been quoted as saying, "'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'--that song was about the ice cream and cake. Me and Mick, we'd really wanted some of that. We'd been looking forward to the balloon animals as well and couldn't believe we had to go home without getting any. But 'Clown', that was written to memorialize the poor Bozo bloke. 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'--you know that one, right?--that's about another clown, and so is 'As Tears Go By'. That's about a sad clown. Clowns are a big motif in our work. We write about clowns a lot."
